About Us

MISSION OF THE AAJJP

African-American children face a duality of socialization in our society, which is characterized by pervasive racism and untenable obstacles.  However, we cannot live in excuses, denial, and justification by failing to recognize and be willing to resolve our own problems which result in the deprivation and delinquency of our children.  Clearly, there is a correlation between lack of education and incarceration. Equally so, teen pregnancy and single parenting play a critical role in the development or lack thereof, of our children.

The mission of the African-American Juvenile Justice Project (AAJJP) is to provide programs and services for social justice and reform, which engage the African-American community, the child welfare, and juvenile justice system.   In doing so, the AAJJP strives to address critical issues facing the African-American community.  While we are a race-specific program, we encourage participation from all persons of concern.

AAJJP is neither a "not for profit" nor "for profit" organization.  We are neither a "business, agency nor organization."  We are a "Project," which is a mission, an assignment and/or an undertaking. We do NOT solicit money or accept private or public funding. We are not a government agency and we do not accept grants, public or private donations.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Sherri Jefferson is an attorney and juvenile advocate.  She is also the founder of the African-American Juvenile Justice Project (AAJJP).  AAJJP is dedicated to addressing African-American children in the child welfare and juvenile justice system.   Sherri is charged with implementing programs and services that target social justice and reform.  The areas of interest include, but are not limited to,  healthcare to education and, from delinquency to deprivation.  AAJJP plays an active role in the lives of African-American children by holding both the system and the African-American community accountable for the lives of our children.   Prior to founding AAJJP, Sherri was in private practice, and she served the State of Georgia as its Juvenile Division Chief, and Public Defender.  While at the Public Defender's office, she did both trial and appellate work and handled the serious felony cases for both adults and juveniles.  This included her specializing in juveniles charged as adults.  She practices before the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Georgia as well as in Federal Court.  Sherri is a trained CASA and volunteers her services to train other CASA (volunteers) in the areas of juvenile law and diversity.   An advocate of higher and continued learning, Sherri served as an adjunct for Criminal Justice and Black Studies.  Sherri is an active legislative advocate for laws, which address children/juveniles, healthcare among the poor, education, and the elderly.   She has authored and published works, and has written articles on issues pertaining to social justice.

Sherri,

You are one of the most motivated, tenacious and hardworking individuals I've ever known. I admire you so much. You are a true example of what it means to take the bull by the horns and complete the task that is before you. No matter what the task, if it means we go about accomplishing it alone, so be it. Your own personal drive has taken you to where you are today and this is only the beginning.  Sherri, there is a wonderful future ahead for you and you will hopefully be blessed to see it and to be a blessing to others. Let nothing or anyone stop you. Ever.
